For over 10 years, Minecraft has confidently remained in the top 10 games known far beyond the gaming community. Its minimalist, intuitive design, along with the use of creative mode, allows the sandbox to be used for creating art and even in educational processes.

But let's not forget that Minecraft was initially a survival game with RPG elements, and quite well-developed ones. One of these is the character level, which grants access to better equipment, increases parameters, and improves the quality of life as it rises.

To make life easier for new players, give fresh ideas to game veterans, we aimed to answer the question: what is the best way to get XP in Minecraft? As a result, we have compiled 15 methods to farm xp, which we share with you in our article.

Basics of xp in Minecraft

The experience system involves gaining coveted points for performing actions that have an impact on the environment: killing mobs, mining ores, trading, fishing, etc. What's important is not the amount of time spent, but the actual result in the form of transformed objects and dropped orbs of exp.

This brings us to the second factor — these orbs need to be picked up. In addition to designing the fastest way to get XP in Minecraft, the user needs to think about how they will be able to collect them for their character's statistics.

Orbs of exp have a lifespan (about 5 minutes) + a HP (yes, the xp will be lost forever if you burn it, place it in lava, or explode it). So, a well-placed experience collection point is crucial.

In our selection, we decided to categorize the ways to farm experience into safe, dangerous, and those requiring additional manipulations to obtain XP.

Safe (mostly) methods of xp farming

Mining

Who would have thought that in a game about mining, crafting, the first one would grant experience (crafting, by the way, mostly does not give XP). This means you can take a few sturdy pickaxes (preferably more to avoid limiting yourself due to durability) — and start mining.

Upon completing the process of mining ore from a block, orbs of experience will drop along with the resource with a certain chance. For mining coal, you get from 0 to 2 XP, emerald, diamond — from 3 to 7, redstone — from 1 to 5. This is relatively little, but it is safe, making it suitable for beginners.

Fishing

Another safe way for a beginner to gain experience is fishing. To do this, a player only needs to craft a fishing rod and find a suitable body of water: a river, lake, or sea. After that, the character will secure a small but steady source of xp growth (from 1 to 6 XP points per catch). As a bonus, you get the caught fish and other random, mostly useful items.

Breeding animals

Taming, breeding animals also provide a significant experience boost, requiring only a little effort to gather the necessary feed for the pets.

This method is made easier by the fact that almost every starting biome has animals that can be bred. However, compared to mining, fishing, there is a downside — breeding animals has its limits, so it’s in the player’s interest to regularly monitor and renew their barnyard population.

Trading

Few think about it, but trading is not just an element of the in-game economy. This process also grants the much-desired points. However, not all items can be traded, and sometimes it can be extremely unprofitable.

Nevertheless, if you have found or established a trading post — rest assured that you will regularly use this method to fill the experience bar too.

Smelting

Smelting ores into ingots significantly expands the range of available recipes for weapons, armor, consumables, and other necessary items, but besides that, it also gives experience.

However, if you smelt blocks that give exp from mining, the amount of xp from the furnace will be significantly less. On the other hand, in the furnace, a player can process not only ore but also many other items, including food, and get modest but necessary experience points for them.

Grindstone

An unobvious way to gain experience in Minecraft is using the grindstone. If a player wants to remove unwanted enchantments from a weapon or armor, they will receive a small amount of exp.

Enchanted items are not very common at early levels, but once you get them, you can set up a completely waste-free recycling process — first, remove all the enchantments, then disassemble the items to get xp for each stage.

Smashing bottle o' enchanting

Each of these bottles gives from 3 to 11 points, which is a solid boost in the early stages of the game. All a player needs to do is find them in treasure chests or trade for them. Considering you can carry up to 64 bottles in one inventory slot, the efforts of collecting them will be generously rewarded with one or even several levels.

Getting advancements

In Minecraft Java Edition, there are advancements similar to achievements, awarded for reaching certain milestones in the game. Developers have set rewards for them ranging from 50 to 1000 experience points. While this may not seem like much, the majority of advancements can be earned while doing simple and necessary tasks that don't require intentional distraction. Therefore, this bonus should not be underestimated.

Dangerous methods of xp farming

Killing mobs

In most computer games, killing mobs provides the main percentage of the character's experience. In Minecraft, this focus shifts to other activities, but that doesn't mean you should ignore PvE as a way to earn points.

Killing most hostile monsters only grants 5 to 8. Only the death of more dangerous types (which require better equipment) will give more than 10 points. Therefore, creating mob farms and mob grinders is the best variant to have a consistent source of XP.

Farming nether quartz and sculk blocks

Formally, these methods of gaining experience are safe, but these blocks can only be found in the Nether + Deep Dark (yielding 1 to 5 points), so they are not recommended for beginners. Each of these blocks provides a good XP boost, so when you reach these locations, remember to have a pickaxe in an inventory.

Slaying the Ender Dragon

The majestic, gigantic Ender Dragon (especially compared to the character's texture) truly creates the image of a final boss, which only a skilled and well-equipped player can defeat. The reward for this is appropriate — the first kill of the Ender Dragon grants an impressive 12,000 XP (enough to reach level 68)!

You can respawn the boss using End Crystals, but subsequent victories will only give 500 points, which is still quite good.

Killing the Wither

The second highest XP-yielding mob is the Wither. Players can summon the monster using three wither skeleton skulls, and defeating the beast gives 50 XP. This is a decent amount, but most players consider the risk not worth the reward.

Before the battle, players should ensure they have good equipment and resistance to elemental damage

Automation of xp farm in Minecraft

AFK fishing

If earning XP is a priority in the game, the user can spend some time creating conditions for automatic experience collection. The first method is AFK Fishing.

Since all that is required to catch fish is pressing the left mouse button, you can hold it down with a book or, if you’re a coding god, write a macro.

Congratulations, now anyone can accumulate tons of experience without even touching the mouse!

Mob farm

Another way to simplify XP collection in Minecraft is mob farms. All you need to do is find a spawner block in a cave, enclose it in a specific variant to prevent monsters from escaping, and leave a spot to kill them safely and collect the experience.

Many players appreciate this method because, although it requires some initial setup, it pays off multiple times over with a large number of creatures that can be killed safely to level up.

Mob grinder

A variation of the mob farm is the mob grinder, where the player doesn't even need to manually kill the monsters. The simplest (and most passive) variations involve creatures falling into traps with lava or water, where they burn or drown, or simply die from fall damage.

Active systems use blocks with pistons and other devices that the player must operate to ensure the monsters meet their doom.

The downside is the previously mentioned lifespan limitation of experience orbs. So, while a mob farm allows the player to actively explore the surrounding world and periodically return to kill beasts, collect XP, a mob grinder is more suited to a passive playstyle, where long journeys are replaced with building, farming, and other peaceful activities.
