Although its explosive popularity has waned over the years, the game remains one of the most renowned in the franchise. Yet among millions of players, few have reached the maximum level 50. Why is that? The answer is simple: it requires a tremendous amount of effort. Not everyone knows the tricks that help to lvl up faster.

In our article, we discuss the main stages of character development from level 1 to 50. Also offer several recommendations on how to accelerate progress.
How does character progress work?
Character leveling can be divided into two stages:
- 1–40. There are no special conditions for leveling up: it requires only accumulating XP. Naturally, as the hero's progress increases, more experience points are needed, which grow into six figures. Catch Pokémon, fight for gyms, participate in raids, and make friends/allies.
- 41–50. Here, in addition to XP, players need to complete various challenging tasks.

Nearly any interaction with Pokémon grants XP. Here are these activities:
- Catching creatures, although it doesn’t give much experience — just 100 points.
- Adding an entry to the Pokédex, which gives ten times more — 1,000 points.
- Catching, depending on the quality of the throw, ranges from 20 to 1,000.
- Hunting in AR mode gives an additional 300 points.
- Participating in raids gives a significant experience boost — from 3,500 to 13,000, depending on the difficulty of the battle.
- Breeding creatures — from 500 to 4,000 XP.
- Evolving a pet — adds 1,000.
- Spinning a PhotoDisk, depending on the conditions, gives from 25 to 300. The most experience is gained by spinning at a new PokéStop.
- Inviting friends + strengthening relationships with them. Social activity can yield from 200 to 100,000.

For a better understanding of how progress works and what life hacks exist for quick leveling, we divide the first stage further into two: from lvl 1–20, 21–40. Let’s look at the distinguishing features at these stages of character development.
Features of levels 1–20

In total, at this stage, you need to gain 210,000 XP. Try to collect all Pokémon, as you can later combine them to gain even more experience. To ensure the gamer has enough Pokéballs, fight in gyms and spin Photo Discs. These activities, besides providing balls for catching, also give other useful items.
At levels 9 + 10, the title rewards the user with a Lucky Egg — one of the best items for character development! It grants double XP for half an hour. It's very important to save these eggs, as they will come in handy later when a lot of experience is needed.

Make the most of all the project features, including inviting friends! At the last level of friendship with a user, players can gain 100,000. However, reaching the "Best Friends" status requires waiting a full 90 days! Therefore, gamers should plan for this in advance.
The Great Ball + Ultra Ball, which players receive at lvl 12 + 20 respectively, can be obtained from PokeStops and gyms. The Ultra Ball has the highest chance of capturing, making it sensible to use for rare or valuable creatures.

At this stage, it's important for gamers to start breeding pets in incubators, as this also yields additional XP. The farther you progress, the more experience you gain from hatching a Pokémon. The maximum distance is 12 kilometers. For such a so-called marathon, a player earns 4,000 points.
Moving on to a stage that may surprise many.

This begins the preparation for the most challenging part of leveling. Here, gamers need to use all sources of XP, as nearly 20 million will be required! Whenever possible, use stored Lucky Eggs to double the amount of XP gained.
For instance, achieving the "Best Friends" status can yield 200,000 experiences. Within the community, this is considered one of the best sources for leveling. The item is also used before evolving Pokémon, hatching eggs, or raiding.

It's crucial to start accumulating Star Dust, as a vast amount will be needed to improve companions. Fortunately, the developers have added the Star Piece, which doubles the dust received for 30 minutes.
These items should be used strategically, wisely, for example, using a Lucky Egg during a Raid Hour event, which occurs weekly and increases the number of gyms, raids. To achieve the greatest effect, cooperate with other players and go after the toughest bosses.
The Pokémon GO community is very friendly, and there is etiquette, social networks where you can arrange meet-ups and teamwork. Gamers are better off not ignoring the opportunity!

Additionally, players need not only to catch Pokémon but also to actively collect, develop them, complete research tasks, and earn medals. Especially valuable are the gold, platinum ones. The more medals a character can collect, the easier it will be later on, as this affects the achievement of certain levels.
How quickly a user progresses through this stage depends on their maximum activity in the title. One way or another, as soon as the player reaches lvl 40, surprises begin.
Features of levels 41–50 and useful tips for progressing

To advance each lvl beyond experience, users must complete several tasks. Some of these tasks are quite challenging, while others might have been completed accidentally during gameplay.
Regarding gaining experience, try to combine Lucky Eggs with Spotlight Hour. This weekly event increases the appearance of certain Pokémon and enhances rewards depending on the day: sometimes double the Star Dust received, or crucially for leveling, double the XP for activities.
Let’s examine each lvl in more detail.
Level 41

Here, 6,000,000 XP is required. This amount can be accumulated while fulfilling tasks required to reach the lvl:
- Power up 20 legendary Pokémon.
- Win 30 raids.
- Catch 200 creatures in a day.
- Earn 5 gold medals.
If you are playing in Free-to-Play mode, completing the raid task will take a month, as you only get one free raid pass per day.
Catching two hundred fluffy heroes might seem a tough task. Preparation is required, choose a day (preferably on a "Community Day", when more creatures appear), and have a decent amount of resources, such as Pokeballs.
Level 42

To lvl up, you need to gather another 7,500,000 XP, and also meet the following conditions:
- Evolve Eevee into seven unique forms.
- Use 15 items for evolution.
- Make 3 Excellent throws.
- Use 200 berries while catching.
Compared to other levels, this one is not too difficult. The main challenge may only arise with the first requirement, as achieving the necessary "Eeveelution" largely depends on chance.
Level 43

Now, to lvl up, 9,000,000 XP is required! In addition to this huge number, the game sets the following conditions:
- Accumulate 100,000 Stardust.
- Catch five legendary Pokémon.
- Make 200 Super Effective throws.
- Earn five platinum medals.
Arguably, the hardest task presented is accumulating 100,000 Stardust, as it is one of the most demanded and valuable resources. However, you can facilitate the acquisition by using a Star Piece during "Community Day" or wait for an event with an increased bonus for receiving dust.
Let’s continue, as we have almost made it halfway!
Level 44

Here, you'll need 11,000,000 XP and focus on the Go Battle League. For gamers not interested in the PvP aspect, this can seem challenging, as they now need to understand the meta (best Pokémon for battle), build battle teams, and compete against other players.
Requirements:
- Play in the Go Battle League 20 times;
- Win 30 battles in the Great League;
- Win 30 battles in the Ultra League;
- Win 30 battles in the Master League.
Additionally, it's important to gain ranks in the League to facilitate reaching lvl 50 later on.
Level 45

Players need to accumulate 13,000,000 XP here. The farther you progress, the higher this number goes, reaching astronomical figures! The tasks require focusing on the Team GO Rocket fighters.
- Defeat 100 Team GO Rocket fighters;
- Defeat the Team Rocket leader 50 times;
- Purify 100 Shadow Pokémon;
- Earn five platinum medals.
For every defeated Rocket team member, players receive a part of a radar, from which a full radar can be assembled to locate one of the leaders: Cliff, Sierra, or Arlo. Challenges may arise with purifying Pokémon, as it requires Stardust + Candy, so it is recommended to purify those creatures that consume fewer resources.
Level 46

Besides needing 15,500,000 XP, there are no particularly challenging aspects here. Players have usually encountered all activities throughout the game, so the tasks should not come as a surprise. They are as follows:
- Take photos of your Pokémon seven days in a row;
- Make 50 Excellent throws;
- Complete 100 field tasks;
- Hatch 30 eggs.
Try to avoid difficult quests at PokeStops and, if possible, hatch eggs with a 2-kilometer distance. These simple tips will significantly ease this stage, allowing the gamer to continue ascending to the maximum lvl in Pokémon GO.
Level 47

The next goal: 18,000,000 XP plus several tasks focused on interaction with companions:
- Power up three heroes to their maximum CP;
- Win a three-star raid with creatures whose CP is below 1500;
- Win 30 raids using a team of unique Pokémon;
- Earn 20 platinum medals.
"Unique Pokémon" implies that the team will consist of different fighters. The second task may seem challenging due to its restrictions, but here the gamer simply needs to choose a suitable raid.
Level 48

We're almost there! The amount of required XP is growing (now 21,000,000!). Tasks are focused on the peaceful part of gameplay:
- Earn 300 hearts with your Buddy;
- Receive 20 gifts from Buddy;
- Travel 200 kilometers with this companion;
- Walk 25 kilometers a week, 8 times.
Walk, play, feed, and take photos with the companion! These are some of the most pleasant, endearing requirements.
Gamers can enable the "Adventure Sync" option, which allows the title to count steps when the app is closed. This provides additional rewards, facilitates task completion.
Level 49

Not only do the experience requirements increase (25,000,000), but the tasks also become more complex. To reach this lvl, users must meet the following conditions:
- Acquire 50 Lucky Pokémon via trade;
- Trade 10 creatures caught in different places, with a distance of over 300 kilometers between them;
- Send 500 gifts to friends;
- Earn 35 platinum medals.
For some players, the second requirement may seem daunting, but the Pokémon GO community is very friendly. There is always someone willing to make a trade.
To acquire lucky characters through trading, unfortunately, users must rely solely on luck. The chance of this event is low. However, sometimes after reaching "Best Friends" status with another player, it can change to "Lucky Friends", which guarantees that your next trade will yield a Lucky Pokémon.
Level 50

We have now reached the maximum lvl. The requirements are the most stringent, but achievable:
- 30,000,000 XP;
- Make 999 Excellent throws;
- Catch 5 legendary Pokémon in your next five encounters with them;
- Defeat the Team GO Rocket leader 3 times using only a fighter with a CP of 2500 or lower;
- Achieve rank 10 in the GO Battle League.

Players who reach this milestone have, in one form or another, already encountered all the challenges that the project offers. Of course, accumulating the necessary amount of XP is the most difficult among them. This incredible number far exceeds previous requirements. Well, the developers assume that only the most patient gamers will reach the maximum lvl!
