The U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) have filed a lawsuit against Adobe. The agencies claim that the company has made it excessively difficult to cancel paid subscriptions for its products, thereby violating consumer protection laws.

Adobe has been encouraging its customers to subscribe annually to its software products like Photoshop. However, the company allegedly did not adequately disclose the terms of service cancellation, according to the FTC.

The regulator asserts that Adobe:

  1. Developed an overly complex subscription cancellation process that requires navigating numerous web pages and interacting with multiple support representatives;
  2. Implemented hidden fees amounting to several hundred dollars for early termination of annual subscriptions.

The Department of Justice and the FTC seek to impose a fine on Adobe for violating consumer protection laws. Additionally, the agencies aim to obtain a court order prohibiting such actions by the company in the future.

Adobe representatives have already responded to the authorities' claims. The company stated that its subscription cancellation process is straightforward and the terms are quite transparent. Adobe intends to contest the lawsuit in court.
