The company Omdia conducted a survey among more than 600 developers about the state of the gaming industry. The research was carried out in May 2024 as part of the Game Developer Collective initiative. Here are the main findings.

38% and 21% of respondents stated that the industry is in a "bad" and "very bad" state, respectively. 13% described the current situation as "good," while 26% took a neutral stance. 49% of respondents reported that the industry's situation will not change in the next six months. 19% of developers said the situation will get worse, while 25% of respondents believe the environment will start to improve.

Survey participants identified the main reasons for the industry's difficulties as unreasonable investor expectations (61% of votes), poor management (58%), and rising development costs (41%). Other factors mentioned by respondents included high competition, significant marketing expenses, lack of innovation, and reduced consumer demand. 

Among those working full-time, 48% reported that they did not meet their sales targets in the second quarter of 2024. 40% of respondents said their projects met established goals, and only 13% of developers exceeded planned targets.
