Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination studio head Chris Meledandri have confirmed that they are working on the next Mario movie. The announcement was made on March 10, during "Mario Day", which is celebrated annually as MAR10 Day, honoring the mustachioed plumber's franchise. The film's release in the USA will take place on April 3, 2026.

The creators of the original movie, including the animation team from The Super Mario Bros. Movie, screenwriters, and directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, will work on the new film. The production of the movie is at an advanced stage, and the creators will soon begin animation. The new project will be part of the expansion of Nintendo's cinematic universe, which may also include other beloved characters from the company. Fans hope to see Yoshi, Princess Peach, and Bowser in the movie.
