The Shadow of the Erdtree expansion for Elden Ring is set to be the most expansive addition in FromSoftware's history. It will bring to the open world:

  • a new area to explore,
  • several characters,
  • global events,
  • and several unique mechanics.

Some of these were detailed by game designer Hidetaka Miyazaki during a conversation with journalists from the Japanese publication Famitsu.

Responding to a question about gameplay innovations, he hinted at the introduction of a mechanic reminiscent of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. During the events of the DLC, players will have the opportunity to level up their character in a special way. The character development process will mirror the improvement of attack power in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

Attack power in Sekiro signifies how much damage a player inflicts on enemies with each attack, and this value increases as the game progresses. The goal of adding such a mechanic to the DLC is to give players the freedom to decide how challenging they want their experience to be.

As another significant innovation in Shadow of the Erdtree, the developer mentioned new types of weapons, spells, and activatable abilities. The expansion will feature 8 new types of weapons, in addition to expansions to existing ones.
