Representatives of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced their intention to create an Esports Olympics on their website on June 14. The decision is set to be confirmed at the next IOC Session.

The organization is already in talks with a potential organizer. Details are expected to be revealed "very soon" when final formalities are completed.

Because of the formal and bureaucratic nature of the IOC's operations, this idea should be approached with some skepticism. It is unlikely to get the glory of most prestigious competition, as developers and publishers are unlikely to be interested in transferring influence and hype from their own popular games. Additionally, esports is known for its international nature, and tournaments among national teams (like WESG) have proven to be unsuccessful.

Last june, the IOC hosted a special esports event in Singapore. It gathered six million viewers, and such a success was unnoticed as the organization's leadership decided to explore the topic of an Esports Olympics.
