In a new report, Newzoo announced that the PC and console gaming market experienced substantial growth in 2023, generating $93.5 billion in revenue. The top 10 most popular games on each platform last year were mostly "old" hits. Fortnite was in the highest demand. The lists also included Grand Theft Auto 5, Counter-Strike 2, Minecraft, Rocket League, Apex Legends and Call of Duty. The rankings were based on the average number of active players per month.

Newzoo reportImage: newzoo.comNewzoo experts revealed that up to 80% of the total gaming time in 2023 was spent on 66 games. Of this time, 60% was spent by users playing games released at least 6 years ago. For example, Fortnite, Roblox, League of Legends, Minecraft and GTA 5 accounted for 27% of the total gaming time.

Players spent 23% of their time playing new games and annual sequels like Madden or NBA. Only 8% of the total gaming time was spent on new releases such as Diablo 4 and Baldur's Gate 3.

According to analysts, it is difficult for game studios to grow their user base. The most successful in this regard are "evergreen games and reliable content pipelines". Newzoo predicts over $189 billion in revenue from the gaming market in 2024.
