Valve has introduced a built-in gameplay recording system in Steam. Players can save, edit, and publish videos without the need for additional tools. The developers of the digital store have launched these new features in test mode.

The system supports the ability to record either in the background or on demand using a hotkey. In both cases, users can immediately review the recorded video without needing to close the game.

The final videos can be edited — users can cut out highlights or remove unnecessary frames. Additionally, the system supports a timeline with special markers. Users can manually mark important episodes and use automatically created hints if the game supports this function. If compatible, the timeline will highlight highlights as well as less interesting episodes—such as when the player was in the main menu.

Finished videos can be shared within Steam, including transferring them from a computer to a smartphone or Steam Deck, as well as exporting them in MP4 format. The system also allows creating temporary links for viewing videos outside Valve’s environment.

Company added that they optimized the video recording feature to minimize CPU load. Additionally, users can pre-select the amount of space videos can occupy and control which audio channels are used during recording. To try out the new feature, users need to activate the beta version in Steam settings.
