At the 2024 Game Developers Conference, the legendary Tetris mastermind Alexey Pajitnov and Ocean Media studio director Vedran Klanac took the stage to unveil a captivating video showcasing the prototype for their unreleased Tetris sequel Tetris Reversed.

It was back in July 2011 that these two gaming luminaries first joined creative forces, with Pajitnov spearheading the conceptual design and crafting a compelling PowerPoint pitch, while Klanac lent his programming expertise to bring the prototype to life.

Tetris ReversedImage: venturebeat.comReverse Tetris was very similar to the original Tetris, including the familiar shapes and the focus on scoring points. Pajitnov kept the effect of disappearing lines, which he said was one of the most satisfying moments in the original game.

The sequel had several key features. According to the game rules, after placing a colored block, it would remove all the tiles beneath it and leave a black hole in the shape of its own figure. The player's goal is to remove as many lines as possible. If there are no more placement options and the player risks losing, they can press the Reverse button to get out of the difficult situation. All black tiles will become gray, and all gray tiles will become black.

There are no win conditions only a high score. If the player manages to remove all the blocks, they will receive a mega-bonus. But they still need to press the Reverse button, and the game field will be completely refreshed. Pajitnov said that the field sometimes becomes impossible to clear, so victory is not guaranteed and does not depend on the falling shapes. The average game duration was around 10 minutes.
